A Look Back at the GUFO Collective's Residency at Aperto

The GUFO collective has turned Aperto into a true laboratory for collective creation, filled with invitations, discussions, workshops, and banquets.

During its residency, GUFO worked on designing the next issue of HOOT, a non-periodical magazine conceived as a series of conversations with professionals from the art world centered on the concept of work—viewed as an activity, a method, an environment, a symbol, and a necessity. This residency revolved around the theme of food and banquets as spaces for encounter, sharing, and collective reflection.

In June, the APERTO space hosted students from the École nationale supérieure d'arts de Paris Cergy (ENSAPC) for a two-day collective workshop, inviting them to explore conversation and orality as editorial and visual materials.

As part of this initiative, the collective also organized two events open to the public: an evening of readings and a closing event for the residency, featuring performances and readings.

14/06/2026 - SOAKING WORDS - Workshop Cergy x Gufo x Aperto

This two-day workshop invited students to explore conversation and orality as editorial and artistic materials. Drawing on a selection of texts read on Wednesday, June 17, as well as improvised discussions and/or collected spoken words, the workshop focused on working with voices not only as content but also as textures.

The workshop sought to examine the ways in which speech circulates: how does a conversation move from an oral space to a printed form? What becomes of a voice when it is transcribed, edited, cut up, laid out, and reproduced? How can it be preserved—or transformed—through the processes of editing and printing?

The preferred editorial format was the poster, conceived as a space for public expression and circulation. Particular attention was paid to printing techniques that utilize fatty substances—oils, margarine, fat, wax, oil-based chalk ink, transfer, imprinting, saturation, and pressure. Fat was considered both as a technical material and for its specific properties: density, overflow, trace, opacity, and contamination.

The workshop emphasized collective experimentation, circulation protocols, and rapid forms of publication. It gave rise to editorial objects in which speech became surface, texture, and imprint, and in which printing served to set sound in motion within space.
