Dora García & Esteban Buch

Wednesday 17 May 2023 at 7 pm

Dora García and Esteban Buch engage a new figure of intellectual and artistic emancipation at the same time, essential to the present time.

Hosted by poet and teacher Jérôme Mauche for the past ten years, the "Poésie plateforme" meetings initiate moments of unexpected dialogue. Invitations that make possible the meeting between an artist and an exchange partner coming from a wide spectrum of practices - poets, novelists, and some of the most stimulating researchers - as close as possible to their approach and work, creating back and forth between uses, temporalities and invention, through the prism of an art that questions the possible and elaborates worlds.

This "Poésie Plateforme" meeting will see a dialogue between Dora García, an artist whose work has changed the relationship with the public, with performance, with sculpture and with film, and Esteban Buch, a specialist in the links between scholarly and popular music, and their political resonance in the 20th and 21st centuries.

This unprecedented encounter, which will take place at the Pernod Ricard Foundation, is taking place on the occasion of two exhibitions of Dora García's work: at the MUKHA, in Antwerp, under the title "Elle a plusieurs noms" (She has several names) - a retrospective of her performances - and at the Galerie Michel Rein, Paris, for a presentation of her recent work on the poet Mayakovsky. Esteban Buch has recently published the remarkable Playlist - Musique et sexualité, MF (2022).

This moment of sharing experiences, of co-creation - since this is what is at stake in these meetings - will allow us to grasp the importance and the finesse of their approaches, to cross in echo some of their interrogations between History and history(ies) - omitted, decentered and forgotten lives -, from opera to song, from psychoanalysis to feminisms, from rereading to collective.

Dora García's practice is situated at the intersection of visual arts, theater, psychoanalysis, reality and fiction, and literature. Her starting point is the exhibition space as a field of experimentation between visitors, the work and the place, questioning community and individuality in contemporary societies. She represented Spain at the 54th Venice Biennale and also participated in Skulptur Projekte Münster 07, as well as the 56th Venice Biennale and Documenta 13, among others.

Esteban Buch is director of studies at the EHESS. His books include, La Neuvième de Beethoven – Une histoire politique, Gallimard, 1999 ; Le cas Schönberg – Naissance de l’avant-garde musicale, Gallimard, 2006 ; L’affaire Bomarzo – Opéra, perversion et dictature, Editions de l’EHESS, 2011.He is the author of contemporary opera librettos and was the protagonist of the documentary film Juan, como si nada hubiera sucedido by Carlos Echeverría, 1987, about the people who disappeared during the Argentine dictatorship.
