Martha Kirszenbaum

Curator

Martha Kirszenbaum (born 1983 in Vitry-sur-Seine) is a curator and art critic based in Paris and Los Angeles.

She holds degrees in political history and cultural studies from Sciences Po Paris and Columbia University in New York. She is the curator of the French Pavilion at the 2019 Venice Biennale, selected by Laure Prouvost. Martha Kirszenbaum founded and directed Fahrenheit, a contemporary art center and residency program in Los Angeles (2014-17). She previously worked as an associate curator at Kunsthalle Mulhouse (2014), curator-in-residence at the Belvedere Museum/21st Haus in Vienna (2012) and at the Center for Contemporary Art in Warsaw (2010). She has also worked at the New Museum in New York (2008-10), the Cabinet de la Photographie at the Centre Georges Pompidou (2007) and the Media and Performance Department at MoMA (2006-07). She has also organized exhibitions, screenings, performances and debates in international institutions such as the ICA in London, Palais de Tokyo in Paris, Kistefos Museum, Kunstall Stavanger, Beirut Art Center, Fondation Ricard in Paris, Kadist Paris and San Francisco, Pejman Foundation in Tehran, 221A in Vancouver, Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, Marrakech Biennale and Istanbul Biennale. She is a regular contributor to Flash Art, Mousse, CURA and Kaleidoscope among other publications, and has led seminars on curatorial practices at UCLA, Université Paris VII and Malmö Art Academy. She has served on the jury of the Jan Van Eyck Academy, the Estonian Pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale, the Prix de la Ville de Marseille and the Cité Internationale des Arts. She is a reporter for the Pinchuk Future Generation Art Prize and the Herb Alpert Award, and serves on the committee of the Tselinny Art Center in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
