Sarah Benslimane's solo show
Opening on Thursday, May 13 at 6 p.m.
Sarah Benslimane’s work reflects the glut of information, images, stories, and styles that are now accessible simultaneously and instantly. Her sculptural paintings play with the viewer’s expectations of reality and seem to offer clues to a puzzle that has spiraled out of control.
Drawing on the clean lines of Minimalism as well as the irony of NeoGeo, Sarah Benslimane’s works deconstruct preconceived notions of vulgarity, gentleness, authority, and contemporaneity, opening up a space where naivety, roughness, humor, and gravity coexist. She combines different elements, pushing the boundaries of painting and questioning the status of the artwork, while reflecting on its potential trivialization as a decorative object—one that could belong just as easily in a domestic setting as in the cold detachment of the institutional white cube.
