Christian Bertin
Christian Bertin (Fort-de-France, 1952) trained at the École régionale des Beaux-Arts in Mâcon and then at the École des Arts décoratifs in Geneva. Returning to Martinique in 1986, he taught at SERMAC and occasionally led workshops for students from various art schools (Montpellier, Quimper, Rennes, etc.).
His work, which takes the form of installations and performances, explores the themes of memory, blès (wounds) and healing, using everyday objects that have been recovered, mistreated and magnified. Combining caustic humour, Martinican popular culture and artistic rigour, he has created a body of work that is both open to the world and deeply rooted in his homeland.
Solo exhibitions (selection): Espace Oberkampf (2019), SERMAC (2017), Fondation Clément (2010), Cité des Arts (2009), Tropiques Atrium (2000), etc. Group exhibitions (selection): Fondation Clément (2021), Martinique Contemporary Art Biennale (2013), Fonds Saint-Jacques (2011), National Art Gallery Committee, Barbados (2011), Liverpool Biennial (2010), Abidjan, Ivory Coast (1998).
