Jean-Marc Chapoulie is a French filmmaker and videast.
He performed in the punk and rock scene in Poitiers and played the keyboard in a local punk group: Emergency. He also collaborated on fanzines, including Tant qu’il y aura du rock. From 1992 to 1999, he worked as assistant director of the documentary series Cinéastes de notre temps(Filmmakers of our times), directed by Janine Bazin and André S. Labarthe. Then, from 2002 to 2006, he intervened on a regular basis at the Studio Le Fresnoy and taught at the Ecole supérieure d’art in Grenoble as well as the Regional School of Fine Arts in Besançon. In 2001, Jean-Marc Chapoulie was one of the associated curators at the Lyon Biennale of contemporary art, after having taken his first steps in the domain in collaboration with, amongst others, Harald Szeemann and André S. Labarthe in the 1990s. Jean-Marc Chapoulie was then invited to the Lyon Biennale as an artist, where he presented a work titled The Corridor of Cthulhu, in which he questioned the specific systems of exhibition of the moving image as part of an installation and, in particular, the role played by the spectator in such a context. In 2006, he presented a film on the Tour de France, TDF06, at the Palais de Tokyo. In this case, the principal thrust of his work was the question of editing. Since the end of the 1990s, using the name Alchimicinéma, Jean-Marc Chapoulie proposes hybrid seances, at the same time conferences and performances, projections and installations. In the eponymous collection published in 2008, he reveals his thoughts on what could be recognized as cinema. His considerations include ideas on the redefinition of the genre, elements of support for moving images and a heretical history of filmic practices, as well as the methods of fabrication and exhibition of films, without forgetting questions of author’s rights and copyrights. Since 2006, he has taught at the Fine Arts School in Annecy in the video/cinema department.
