Nathalie Du Pasquier
Nathalie Du Pasquier (born 1957) lives and works in Milan.
Today, Nathalie Du Pasquier is an artist. “I draw, I build things, I paint others,” she explained to Claire Moulène in 2016, although painting—whether two- or three-dimensional — has now become her primary activity.
It was not always this way. A self-taught artist, she trained through extensive travels, particularly in West Africa, and entered the world of art and creation through drawing. Beginning in 1981, she worked as a designer within the Memphis group. Pattern drawing, one of her activities in the collective, became for her “a gateway into expression and composition.” In 1986, Nathalie Du Pasquier decided to leave design behind. She took a studio where she could work alone and devoted herself fully to painting. Her compositions evolved, becoming increasingly abstract. Gradually, sculptural modules began to enter her paintings.
Stopping drawing, turning to design, starting to paint, returning to abstraction, expanding painting into space, reconnecting with drawing, experimenting with sculpture, leaving and revisiting the world of fashion: a chronological approach is probably not the best tool for navigating a trajectory shaped by ruptures, coincidences, and repetitions. Still, a few threads of continuity stand out: a rejection of hierarchy, humor, a constant pursuit of autonomy, and an unwavering faith in the power of forms.
