Make a shadow theatre out of a shoe box!

Conceived as part of “Night Mode,” Arash Nassiri’s solo exhibition, this workshop allows children to discover the art of puppetry, a medium that is an integral part of the film A Bug’s Life (2026) featured in the exhibition.

After a quick tour of the exhibition, the children watch a shadow puppet show, after which they are invited backstage for an introduction to the principles of lighting and projected silhouettes. The children are then divided into small groups to imagine stories they would like to tell. Participants create the characters and sets for the show, and finally present their play to the rest of the group (and to their parents). They go home with a mini shadow theater to create their own shows at home.

A workshop created by puppeteer Soledad Zárate, who worked closely with the artist on the film A Bug’s Life.

Soledad Zárate is a marionettist trained at the Puppet Theatre Barge in 2007 and co-founded String Theatre in 2011. Since then, she has created six productions featuring string and shadow puppets. She worked as a marionette puppeteer on Arash Nassiri’s film A Bug’s Life (2026).

String Theatre is a London-based touring company founded by Stan Middleton and Soledad Zárate that presents long string marionette productions on a custom-built stage with a bridge. This form of puppetry consists of the creation of a world where the marionettes become the main characters on stage, and the puppeteers are out of view, operating from a standing position on the bridge. The lack of human presence on stage allows the artists to transform a small space into a new world with its own sense of scale and depth.
